Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2015, this coloured frosted uncirculated one-dollar coin honours Shake the Kangaroo as part of the six-coin Unlikely Heroes – Great and Small series.

During the First World War, kangaroos travelled overseas with Australian soldiers and became mascots for several military units. One kangaroo became famous through a photograph showing it shaking hands with an Australian soldier near the Egyptian pyramids, earning it the affectionate nickname “Shake.”

The memorable photograph provided Australian troops with a powerful connection to home while serving overseas. The coin’s reverse presents a coloured interpretation of Shake greeting an Australian soldier, while the obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, this Australian legal-tender release had an authorised maximum mintage of 30,000; however, only 9,135 coins were produced.
