Product description

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2015, this coloured frosted uncirculated one-dollar coin honours Sandy the War Horse as part of the six-coin Unlikely Heroes – Great and Small series.

Sandy was the favourite horse of Major General Sir William Bridges, the first commander of the Australian Imperial Force. Of the approximately 136,000 Australian horses sent overseas during the First World War, Sandy was the only one to return home to Australia.

After Major General Bridges died from wounds received at Gallipoli, Sandy remained overseas under the care of Australian Army Veterinary Corps officer Captain Leslie Whitfield. He returned to Melbourne in November 1918 and spent his remaining years at the Central Remount Depot in Maribyrnong, Victoria.

The coin’s reverse features Sandy against a coloured desert landscape, while the obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, this Australian legal-tender release had an authorised maximum mintage of 30,000; however, only 9,976 coins were produced.

Please refer to the supplied photographs for the condition of the coin and presentation card.
