Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2015, this coloured frosted uncirculated one-dollar coin honours Murphy the Donkey as part of the six-coin Unlikely Heroes – Great and Small series.

Donkeys played a vital role during the First World War, carrying water, ammunition and wounded soldiers across steep and dangerous terrain. Murphy is remembered through the story of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who used a donkey to transport injured soldiers from the Gallipoli battlefields.

The coin’s reverse features a coloured depiction of Murphy carrying a wounded soldier through the wartime landscape. The obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, this Australian legal-tender release had an authorised maximum mintage of 30,000; however, only 10,082 coins were produced.
