2015 $1 Horrie The Dog Unlikely Heroes Series Carded Coin - Mintage: 10,002

Product description

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2015, this coloured frosted uncirculated one-dollar coin honours Horrie the Dog as part of the six-coin Unlikely Heroes – Great and Small series.

Horrie was discovered as a puppy in Egypt during 1941 by Private Jim Moody of the Australian 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion. Given the service number EX1, Horrie became the battalion’s loyal mascot and used his distinctive bark to warn soldiers of approaching danger. He travelled with Australian troops through Greece, Crete, Palestine and Syria before being smuggled home to Australia.

The reverse features a coloured depiction of Horrie with military tents in the background, while the obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, this Australian legal-tender release had an authorised maximum mintage of 30,000; however, only 10,002 coins were produced.
