Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2014, this uncirculated one-dollar coin was the inaugural release in the Clever Australia – A Nation of Great Inventors series.
Titled “Medi-Mazing,” the coin celebrates Australian contributions to major medical and scientific developments, including X-ray crystallography, the pacemaker, the development of penicillin, IVF embryo freezing and spray-on skin for burns victims.
The release coincided with the International Year of Crystallography and recognises the work of Australian physicist Lawrence Bragg. In 1912, Bragg developed an equation explaining how X-rays could be used to determine the atomic structure of crystals. He and his father, William Bragg, received the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics for their research.
Designed by Vladimir Gottwald, the reverse incorporates symbols representing Australian medical and scientific achievements. The obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, this Australian legal-tender release had a maximum mintage of 30,000; however, only 12,202 coins were produced.
Please refer to the supplied photographs for the condition of the coin and presentation card.
