Product description
Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2014, this uncirculated one-dollar coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of the retirement of the famous Avro Lancaster bomber W4783, affectionately known as “G for George.”
Built in 1942 and operated by No. 460 Squadron RAAF, G for George completed 90 operational missions over Germany and occupied Europe during the Second World War. Retired from active service in 1944, it remains one of only a small number of surviving wartime Lancaster bombers and is preserved by the Australian War Memorial.
Designed by Aleksandra Stokic, the reverse features a front-facing Lancaster bomber surrounded by a compass-inspired border and bomb symbols representing its successful missions. The obverse carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
The coin is presented on its original Royal Australian Mint collector card, which incorporates the aircraft’s W4783 registration and its 90 mission symbols. With a final mintage of only 19,116, it is an appealing release for Australian military, aviation and commemorative coin collectors.
Please refer to the supplied photographs for the condition of the coin and presentation card.
