Discover one of Australia’s most intriguing maritime mysteries with the 2011 Zuytdorp Shipwreck $1 Silver Proof Coin from the Royal Australian Mint.
The coin commemorates the Dutch East India Company vessel VOC Zuytdorp, which was wrecked off the Western Australian coast in 1712 while carrying passengers, trading goods and a valuable cargo of silver coins. Its reverse design features a representation of a Dutch coin recovered from the wreck alongside an underwater depiction of the famous “carpet of silver” found across the ocean floor. The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Struck to proof quality from one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, this Australian legal-tender coin measures approximately 40.6mm in diameter. It was the 15th and final release in the Royal Australian Mint’s Subscription Silver Proof series and achieved an exceptionally low mintage of only 2,948 coins.
Combining Australian maritime history, pure silver and a scarce final-series release, the Zuytdorp Shipwreck coin is a standout addition to any Royal Australian Mint, shipwreck or Australian silver collection.
